My favorite saint (St. Augustine) who himself was a sex/love addict*.
His mother was a saint [probably codependent]. Her name was Monica. This story gave me hope when Karl was a teenager. God did an intervention on him personally.
Love addiction has been around for ever. Limerence is dangerous in the wrong hands. I like the metaphor of nitroglycerine. It can create a tunnel or blow us up to bits.
From Wikepedia . . .
Saint Monica(AD 331 – 387), also known as Monica of Hippo, was an early Christian saint and the mother of St. Augustine of Hippo. She is remembered and honored in most Christian denominations, albeit on different feast days, for her outstanding Christian virtues, particularly the suffering caused by her husband's adultery, and her prayerful life dedicated to the reformation of her son, who wrote extensively of her pious acts and life with her in his Confessions. Popular Christian legends recall Saint Monica weeping every night for her son Augustine.
I discuss the special issue of Christian Codependents in my first book and an article I wrote last year. They are a special case as their co-dependency is grounded in their belief system.
P.S. I have separated myself from religion because of its homophobia and sexism. But I was told I could keep what I want and leave the rest. So I have kept the Holy Spirit as my Higher Power. She is also known as the Comforter, Guide, Protector, Counselor, Mentor, Nurturer, Voice of Wisdom, Channel to God, etc. etc.
Find your comfort zone when it comes to belief systems.
Saint Augustine and his mother Saint Augustine.
